Thomas William Vaughan, Age 24
Private, 11751, 1/4th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
Thomas was the son of Mr E Vaughan of the Rock, Dawley. Before joining up on August 31st 1914, Thomas had worked at the Castle works, Hadley and had been a worshipper at the Rock Primitive Methodist Chapel.
On November 15th 1917 Thomas was mentioned in dispatches for which he got a Gallantry in the Field card which is shown below, what act of gallant conduct he had carried out I have yet to ascertain, but it was an action that took place on Oct 22nd, you will also notice that Thomas was serving with the 5th Battalion KSLI at the time of his award however on 4th February 1918: the 5th KSLI was disbanded at Jussy and troops dispersed to 1st, 1/4th, 6th and 7th Battalions. This was part of the army reorganisation that took place that month.
Thomas died of wounds on the very day the war finished, November 11th 1918 and probably received these wounds during the last actions that the 1/4th were involved in between the 3rd and 6th November (See Private S. Wilson). War Diary shown below.
He is buried at Cambrai East Military Cemetery in grave III.A.6 and shown below are picture of his present headstone (CWGC) and his original grave stone.
